“This song is about coming back to Mexico after being an ‘illegal alien’ for 21 years,” said lead vocalist Sonia Erika. “I realized the US media is wrong about Mexico. Mexico is not poor, not lacking–it’s far more beautiful than I expected. It is rich in natural resources, land, food, and art.” Sonia’s first legal passage to Mexico came just in time as the US began to shut down in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Her parents soon joined her after reading news headlines that Mexico planned to close its own borders to Americans–in an ironic twist! Guitarist Alexander also joined the trip south of the border. He kept in touch with his colleagues back home in the New York Latin and jazz music scenes. With their help–and despite his poor grasp of Spanish–Death Is A Business connected with a team of musicians and producers in Mexico City. Over a period of ten days, they recorded 8 complete songs. “This was the last song we wrote during our trip,” Alexander said. “It was a last minute addition to our Mexico City sessions after we realized we didn't have any Spanish-language songs.” The song is inspired by more than just COVID-19 and colonialism. The police murder of George Floyd sparked a global racial justice uprising just as the band was preparing to record–with protests even throughout Mexico. From family dinner tables to band rehearsals, everyone was asking what justice really means. “I hope this song encourages people,” Sonia said. “To say fuck it: Take a break from technology, and realize we can create a new world. You don’t have to believe what you see on the news. Throw away rituals that no longer serve you. Heal. And build with love.”
