Habitat is a sequence of restless and chaotic sound worlds recorded over the course of 2021-22 with a variety of instruments, both homemade and traditional, 4 musicians, and a sampler. The recordings combine improvisation with machine-assisted aleatoric programming to create ephemeral, ever-shifting ecosystems made from small, repeating fragments that call and respond, break apart and ricochet, that want to be lived in as much as listened to. Inspired by a an extended stay on a remote island in the St-Lawrence river estuary during the season of high tides, when the weather changes drastically from minute to minute and the chorus of seals, birds and insects is ever present, Habitat asks the listener to seek comfort in chaos and harmony in dissonance.
